NRD casting net wide to catch foreigners with fake ICs

SIBU, March 19: The National Registration Department (NRD) is casting its net wide to detect and arrest foreigners using fake identity cards or are involved in activities of forgery and falsification of identity documents to obtain the MyKad.

NRD Sibu, in a statement today, said enforcement efforts will continue to be intensified following an arrest made by the Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Sarawak NRD on an Indonesian man on suspicion of possessing and using a fake MyKad on March 16.

“The suspect was arrested for having in his possession and using a fake identity card in the name of Ahmad Bin Taha to apply for a replacement of birth certificate by filling in Form X at the NRD UTC (Urban Transformation Centre) Sibu office on Jan 8,” the statement said.


Subsequently, the Magistrate’s Court here had on March 18 fined the accused RM6,000 in default five months jail after he pleaded guilty for the offence under Rule 25 (1)(e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007).

The offence provides for an imprisonment term not exceeding three years or a fine not exceeding RM20,000 or both, if convicted.

Magistrate Punitha Sivaraji presided over the case while Mohammad Malik Mohammad prosecuted.
