MIRI, Aug 19: More than three decades after beginning his quest for citizenship, 61-year-old Brunei-born Yeo Chan Hiong has finally obtained Malaysian citizenship, receiving a ‘K’ status document that brings an end to years of applications and uncertainty.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Deputy Minister for Tourism Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said Yeo had never given up despite the challenges he faced throughout the process.

“I am very happy because after applying for so long, he never gave up. Finally, after years of trying, we received the good news that he has obtained this very important Malaysian citizenship document,” he said during a press conference at the SUPP N.73 Piasau Service Centre on Monday (Aug 17).

Yeo had submitted several citizenship applications over the past 30 years before finally receiving approval.

Despite both his parents being Sarawak citizens, Yeo faced a lengthy citizenship process because he was born in Brunei Darussalam.

“His family only started the process of applying for Malaysian citizenship for Yeo after they returned to settle in Sarawak,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ting, who is also the Piasau assemblyman, urged those still waiting for decisions on their citizenship applications not to lose hope.

He advised applicants to remain patient and continue following the prescribed procedures throughout the application process. — DayakDaily
