KUCHING, Aug 12: Social, family gathering activities, group sports activities and physical meetings in offices which did not comply with standard operating procedures (SOPs) are among the factors contributing to the recent surge of Covid-19 cases.

Sarawak Health Director Dato Dr Mohamed Sapian Mohamed said many individuals were found to be hanging out in public and chatting at eateries without their face masks on.

“In addition, there are also employers who still refuses to allow their employees to undergo screening or work from home when they have symptoms until a cluster emerges in the workplace,” he said in a statement today.

He asserted that the reopening of various business sectors and increase in permitted workforce percentage onsite are the government’s concerns to revive the socio-economic pulse of the community in line with the increase in percentage of Covid-19 immunisation.

However, he said, the flexibility given to the people does not mean the war with Covid-19 has ended, and thus, the general public is urged to continue to adhere strictly with the necessary SOPs.

Dr Mohamed advised people not to visit family members, neighbours or friends unless needed and for employees to stay at home when feeling unwell.

“All individuals experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, breathing difficulties or lethargy, body aches, diarrhea and vomiting for no apparent reason identified, must immediately seek screening and treatment in the nearest health facility although the symptoms are mild and not severe,” he reminded.

Today, Sarawak reported a record high of 1,216 Covid-19 cases in one day, which raised the cumulative number of cases in the State to 84,603.
