Kuching tops Covid-19 daily toll with 618 cases, Sarawak sees new record high of 1,216

KUCHING, Aug 12: Kuching continued to rank first in daily Covid-19 cases recorded among all districts with 618 cases out of the record high of 1,216 cases reported in Sarawak today.

Following Kuching were Serian with 223 cases and Bau with 116, the only other two districts to report three-digit case increases today.


According to a daily report by the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), other districts that saw double-digit case gains were Samarahan (77), Betong (32), Sibu (28), Lundu (18), Bintulu (16), Simunjan (15) and Tebedu (13).

The remaining districts with new infections are Asajaya (9), Miri (7), Saratok (7), Kapit (6), Mukah (6), Selangau (6), Tatau (6), Beluru (3), Dalat (2), Sebauh (2), Kanowit (2), Sri Aman (1), Pusa (1), Belaga (1) and Lawas (1).

With this, the cumulative number of Covid-19 cases in Sarawak now stands at 84,603.

“Out of the 1,216 patients, 789 were detected following close contact screenings where 56 of them were symptomatic.

“Another 215 cases were of individual screenings from active clusters where 37 of them showed signs and symptoms of Covid-19 infection.

“Adding on, 67 cases were of symptomatic screenings and 142 cases were from other screenings in health facilities while the other three were Import-B cases from Sabah and Johor,” it said in its statement today.

Of the total, SDMC noted 1,019 cases were in Category 1 whereby the patients do not develop any symptoms.

There were 194 patients with mild symptoms in Category 2, two with lung infections in Category 3 and one Category 5 patient who needs the support of a ventilator.

As for Covid-19 fatalities, two new cases were recorded in Kuching and Serian today, thus raising the State’s Covid-19 death toll to 477.

The 50-year-old male in Kuching had hypertension, diabetes and chronic liver diseases while the 69-year-old female in Serian had chronic heart disease.

Meanwhile, 735 patients were discharged from hospitals across Sarawak. A total of 8,147 active cases remain in isolation or treatment. — DayakDaily
