KUCHING, April 5: The new Scouts Association of Malaysia Sarawak headquarters in Batu Lintang is set to become a landmark for scout associations nationwide.
According to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), Sarawak Scouts Council vice-president Jumaat Ibrahim said that construction work on the new headquarters is expected to begin within a year once the State government has approved construction work.
“The new headquarters will inspire and instil the Scout spirit in children throughout Sarawak,” he said.
He said this to reporters during his Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house here on April 4.
When asked to elaborate on the building’s design, Jumaat kept mum as he wanted to give the public a ‘surprise’. However, he said that the building’s design would be different from that of other Scout headquarters in Malaysia.
On February 6 last year, a fire destroyed the existing Scout Association of Malaysia Sarawak headquarters.
Meanwhile, Jumaat’s open house was attended by a Scout delegation from Taiwan.
According to Jumaat, the delegation wanted to see Sarawak’s multicultural community for themselves during the festival and gain a deeper understanding of Malaysia’s culture, especially in Sarawak.
He added that the strong unity demonstrated by the multi-racial community in Sarawak during the festival has become a model for other states, even for those outside the country. — DayakDaily
