Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development of Sarawak, Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu, representing the Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development of Sarawak, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, attended the prize presentation ceremony.

When met, Rentap said the tournament was an ideal platform for up-and-coming athletes to showcase their talents and promote muaythai in Sarawak, which is growing rapidly in participation.

“We also saw that it’s not just (clubs) from Kuching, there are clubs from Bintulu, Sibu, Miri, Samarahan and so on. Everything is there, and this shows that there is a lot of interest in this sport.

“The ministry really likes it when there is a large group of athletes; the kids are happy that we can train them and also get the talents to produce athletes to represent Sarawak and the country,” he said.

He also called for the 10th edition of the TYT Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Cup Championship to be brought forward to prepare athletes who will represent Sarawak at the 22nd Malaysia Games (SUKMA) to be held in Selangor next year.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Muaythai Association president Jumaat Ibrahim said that the association has implemented several preparations to discover talents throughout Sarawak.

“We have several plans apart from the TYT Yang di-Pertua Sarawak Cup, where we will hold the Borneo Cup, Bintulu Challenge in Miri, Sibu, and so on,” he explained.

He added that this is an effort by the association to maintain the quality of the sport in Sarawak so that it can be on par with other states and even countries.

Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Mayor Dato Hilmy Othman, Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development of Sarawak permanent secretary, Morshidi Frederick, and Sarawak Youth and Sports Department director, Lamat Nyalau, were also present. — DayakDaily
