KUCHING, April 29: A total of 250 fighters from across Sarawak, Sabah, Peninsular Malaysia, and seven foreign countries have confirmed their participation in the upcoming TYT Muaythai Cup Championship, set to take place from May 1 to 4 at the iconic Kuching Waterfront.
Now in its 9th edition, the prestigious tournament is organised by the Sarawak Muaythai Association (PMNS) and continues to grow in stature as one of the most anticipated fixtures in the regional Muaythai calendar.
According to a media release issued today, this year’s event will also feature international athletes from Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines, Thailand, the United Kingdom, Yemen, and Iran.
Participants will compete in 130 bouts under the Muaythai Muaysport category, along with 16 electrifying Superfight Pro matches that will showcase elite-level combat for championship glory.
In a new twist, PMNS will also introduce the inaugural Borneo Cup 2025, adding further excitement and stakes for participating clubs.
PMNS president Jumaat Ibrahim said the TYT Muaythai Cup has become a flagship event not just for Sarawak, but also for Malaysia and the broader Muaythai community worldwide.
“The growing number of participants year after year, including international entries, proves the championship’s prestige and reach.
“This championship has successfully placed Sarawak on the global Muaythai map and continues to bring positive spillovers to the tourism, hospitality, food, and transport industries,” he said.
He added that the event serves as a vital platform for local athletes, particularly Sarawakians, to gain exposure and sharpen their skills by competing against international opponents.
“Many of our athletes who now represent Sarawak and Malaysia on the international stage first competed in this very tournament,” Jumaat noted.
He also highlighted the event’s role in strengthening national integration as participants from diverse backgrounds engage in healthy sporting competition.
The TYT Muaythai Cup Championship and Borneo Cup 2025 are organised with support from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP), the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak (MYSED), the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia (KBS), the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC)/Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS), and Kuching North City Hall (DBKU).
PMNS expressed special thanks to Sarawak’s Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts cum Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, for his unwavering support, as well as to Malaysia’s Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh for the international endorsement of the event.
Several exciting fringe activities will also be held throughout the four-day tournament.
On Thursday (May 1), there will be the introduction of teams and martial arts demonstrations from 7pm.
On Friday (May 2), Muaysport matches begin at 8am, followed by semi-pro bouts at 2pm and pro fights in the evening. An e-sports competitions featuring 256 players will run parallel with Muaythai matches.
Saturday (May 3) will see the continuation of Muaysport and e-sports events from 8am, followed by semi-pro and pro matches at 7pm and the official opening ceremony. A wrestling showcase with top local talents will cap off the night’s excitement.
The highlights on Sunday (May 4) include the TYT Muaythai Fun Walk and ANMS Kuching Tour Series 3, which will kick off at 6am with an expected 500 participants, alongside health-focused activities. Semi-pro and pro matches resume at 8am, concluding with a certificate presentation ceremony.
The overall champion of the TYT Cup will be determined among Sarawak-based clubs under PMNS based on medal tally, while the Borneo Cup 2025 champion will be selected from top-performing clubs from the Borneo region.
The TYT Cup trophy will be presented on Saturday night, while the Borneo Cup will be awarded during the closing ceremony on Sunday. — DayakDaily
