KUCHING, Aug 22: ‘Sunway College Kuching is not just about accountancy, we are also looking into the digital part of things,’ says Sunway College Kuching director Joseph Lim.

Wishing to break the stereotype that Sunway College Kuching only offers accounting courses, he said the college is closely associated with Tegas Digital Village (TDV) in promoting digitalisation.

He said Sunway College Kuching supports Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s digital economy strategy and wishes to participate in this aspiration for Sarawak’s development.

Touching on upcoming events, Lim said the college would collaborate with TDV to organise the Borneo Corporate Innovation Summit on Oct 13 to bring together the government, private sector, academia and civil society to discuss technology, policy, innovation, and the environment.

“We have secured Tegas chairman Datu Len Talif Salleh to officiate at the event. In addition, several GLCs (government-linked companies) will be involved.

“We have also invited some companies from the Samajaya Free Industrial Zone to come onboard to be the key panellists to discuss innovation.

“This is the first and only such platform. If we get a good response, it will be a yearly thing,” he said when meeting reporters at Sunway College Kuching today.

Lim also noted the partnership with TDV to bring programmes similar to Sunway Kuala Lumpur’s 42KL, a tuition-free, future-proof computer science school with a peer-to-peer environment that does not involve teachers and lecturers, to Sarawak.

He said Tegas’ infrastructure and facilities in its various innovation hubs across the State ought to be utilised fully by organising learning programmes beneficial to young Sarawakians.

“Programs like 42KL, a lot of the applicants are Sarawakians, but they will have to go to KL.

“We were thinking why don’t we have it here, because when the students go to KL, they have to spend on accommodation and transportation.

“So we are looking at expanding our offerings for the benefit of the youth of Sarawak,” he said.
