KUCHING, March 12: Children aged 11 and below are now at greater risk of getting infected with Covid-19 as they have not received proper protection compared to other age groups who have been vaccinated.

According to Ministry of Health (MOH), the rate of child admission to the PICU ward (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) due to Covid-19 increased by 94 per cent for all critical stages from Category 3 to 5, with a significant increase for Category 4 of 200 per cent, followed by Category 5 of 125 per cent.

“The Covid-19 vaccination is particularly important for children aged 5 to 11, especially when the country is about to begin the transition to the endemic phase.

“Therefore, the MOH once again advises parents to take the vaccine for your children to protect them from severe infection of the potentially fatal Omicron variant of Covid-19 infection and its complications namely MIS-C,” it said in a Facebook post today.

To date, only 31.5 per cent children aged 5 to 11 who are eligible to receive Covid-19 vaccines throughout the country have received their first dose.

In Sarawak, the inoculation rate for children of the same age group stands at 61.7 per cent. — DayakDaily
