Missing hiker at at Lambir Hills National Park found safe after using WhatsApp to guide SAR team

MIRI, Aug 22: The 31-year-old woman who went missing while hiking at the Lambir Hills National Park here on Friday (Aug 21) was found to be safe today.

In a report from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the victim, Veronique Joseph, remained contactable via WhatsApp and reported suffering minor injuries after slipping.

At 10.43am, the search and rescue (SAR) team arrived at the coordinates the victim provided. The team was divided into two groups to locate the victim’s exact position, with a search radius of 500 metres from her last known location.

By 11.17am, the victim was located and brought to the operations base at 12.45pm. She was later handed over to her employer and family to be taken to the hospital for a medical examination, bringing the operation to an end by 1pm.

It was reported that the victim had separated from her group when they were descending from the summit. — DayakDaily
