Miri MP urges residents to stay indoors after peat fire incident causes haze

Firefighters are working around the clock to extinguish the raging peat fire in Kuala Baram.

MIRI, March 26: With the recent haze situation caused by the peat fire incident in Kuala Baram, residents in the surrounding areas and Miri have been advised to stay indoors and limit outdoor activities to minimize exposure to hazardous air pollutants.

In response to the situation, Miri MP Chiew Choon Man is urging the public to stay indoors as much as possible.


“It is crucial to drink water regularly to stay hydrated and to stay indoors, especially for those with respiratory conditions, to take necessary precautions and protect themselves from the harmful effects of the haze,” he said.

According to the Department of Environment Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) website, Miri and ILP Miri recorded Air Pollutant Index (API) readings of 94 and 71 respectively as of 3pm today (March 26).

Yesterday (March 25), at 11am, ILP Miri recorded a reading of 114 while Miri recorded 73 API readings.

Currently, firefighting operations at Kuala Baram and Sungai Adong are ongoing.

Yesterday, the Miri Fire and Rescue Department reported that a peat fire had consumed 20 hectares of land in the Sungai Adong area.

Firefighters are actively working on the scene to extinguish the flames and prevent further spread of the fire. — DayakDaily
