MIRI, Feb 14: The Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Chamber (DUBS) Miri branch has proposed a long-term solution through the expansion of the natural gas systems by Petros to address the shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders in the area.
Branch chairman Mohammad Hafidz Rohani expressed deep concern over the ongoing crisis in a statement, which he said affected traders in the food and beverage sector, as well as households relying on gas cylinders for daily use.
They propose the acceleration of natural gas infrastructure installations in Miri for households, schools, and businesses, which would reduce reliance on gas cylinders while providing a more stable and cost-effective energy source.
Reports from the ground highlight the growing severity of the issue. Traders and consumers have reportedly been forced to queue for hours, with over 100 people seen in line yesterday (Feb 13) at various outlets.
Despite the wait, many were left empty-handed due to insufficient stock. This has caused widespread disruption to business operations and compounded the challenges faced by residents amid rising living costs.
DUBS Miri has called for immediate and long-term measures to address the crisis, urging authorities and suppliers to act swiftly.
In addition to the expansion of Petros’ natural gas systems, other recommendations included increasing immediate supply, accelerating distribution, and establishing stock control mechanisms, as well as monitoring the supply chain and ensuring equitable distribution between households and businesses.
“We hope the relevant parties will take this issue seriously and implement proactive measures to ensure energy supply stability for both the community and businesses in Miri,” Hafidz said.
He added that DUBS Miri is prepared to collaborate with all stakeholders to find the best solutions for the benefit of the people and the continuity of businesses. — DayakDaily
