KUCHING, Dec 14: The Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD) aims to establish the single Sarawak Port Authority, which will integrate all six State ports and the necessary laws in Sarawak, with full functionality targeted by June 2025.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas emphasised the importance of this initiative following the recent passage of relevant laws in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly.
“My target is for this to be operational by June next year. There is much work to be done to ensure a seamless transition into this single entity, and we aim to achieve this with minimal cost,” he said at an appreciation dinner for government departments and agencies held here last night (Dec 13).
In addition, Uggah highlighted the announcement of 39 new People’s Projects (Projek Rakyat), with a total value of RM6.07 billion.
“The tendering process will begin next year. Furthermore, the Ministry, through the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak, will oversee over RM1.6 billion worth of infrastructure and amenity projects from all nine regional development agencies. We have a lot on our plate,” he noted.
Uggah expressed his appreciation for all officers’ hard work, commitment, and discipline, stating that these projects would not have been successful without their dedication.
“Our leaders have shown great appreciation for what the Ministry and JKR Sarawak have accomplished. We must not let them down and must stay focused on the tasks ahead,” he said.
He also mentioned that MIPD would send more young officers for courses in fields such as engineering technologies and management.
“We want them to be not only efficient and up-to-date with the latest knowledge but also highly competent.
“Above all, we want them to uphold the highest degree of integrity so that we can become a world-class organisation in the country,” he concluded.
Deputy Minister of Port Development Datuk Majang Renggi, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Development Datuk Ir Aidel Lariwoo, MIPD permanent secretary Datu Chiew Chee Yaw, and Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak director Dr Cassidy Morris were among those present. — DayakDaily
