Minister: Some rural areas would not benefit from Fixed Internet Broadband Unity package due to lack of coverage

KUCHING, Feb 3: Some rural areas would not benefit from the Fixed Internet Broadband Unity Package due to a lack of internet coverage.

In a statement today, Minister for Women, Childhood, and Community Well-being Development Sarawak, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, said the package would not mean anything to them.

However, she also commended the effort to provide the package to benefit B40 households, veterans, persons with disabilities, and senior citizens.

She said it aligns with the principle of equity and urges those qualified not to miss out.

Fatimah said this in response to the Fixed Internet Broadband Package announced by Minister of Communications and Digital Fahmi Fadzil yesterday (Feb 2).

On Feb 2, Fahmi announced the Fixed Internet Broadband internet service with speeds of up to 30 Mbps and unlimited data that costs only RM69 a month and will be offered from March onward with a 24-month subscription contract.

He said the package is offered with the cooperation of fixed internet broadband service providers, namely Telekom Malaysia (TM), CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile, YTL, TIME Berhad, and Astro.

Fahmi also said the initiative was not only in line with the government’s aspiration to alleviate the people’s burden but also an indicator that the unity government and service providers care about the people’s needs and well-being. — DayakDaily
