SERIAN, July 17: Areas within the Sungai Serin area, including Kampung Skuduk, Kampung Chupak, Kampung Plaman Payang, and Kampung Sungai Resit, may once again become a ‘rice bowl’ (areas that are highly productive in rice cultivation).
Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development and Tarat assemblyman Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the area was once one of Sarawak’s rice bowls but was gradually neglected as modernisation took hold, with younger generations no longer interested in continuing the farming tradition.
“These areas, which were once among Sarawak’s rice bowls thanks to the hard work of our parents, will be revived.
“I hope the Ministry of Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development will support these efforts by introducing the latest technology,” Sagah told reporters after the groundbreaking ceremony for the Kampung Sungai Resit, Kampung Plaman Payang, Kampung Skuduk, and Kampung Chupak alternative road project at Dewan Serin here today.
Besides the four villages, Sagah said the potential padi cultivation area extends to Kampung Nyabet and Kampung Taee, covering about 1,000 acres in total.
Meanwhile, he also encouraged youths interested in paddy farming to contact his ministry to attend a padi cultivation technology course in Kedah, as the state is known as Malaysia’s rice bowl.
“In my ministry, we offer a padi cultivation course in Kedah that incorporates the latest farming technology.
“Those who are interested can get in touch with the ministry,” he said, adding that it would help boost the State’s rice production industry. — DayakDaily
