KUCHING, April 24: Junior Chamber International (JCI) Kuching has handed over the JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Award 2020 to Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng today.

MBKS won the Award under the category of Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities for its iPeople-Qmunity app which was developed by Techninier and ARx Sdn Bhd in collaboration with the Council.

Wee, in a media release, expressed delight that the people of Kuching are moving forward with the Kuching Smart City Master Plan by embracing technology in their daily lives.

“I want to dedicate this Award not only to the State government, MBKS and partners Techninier and ARx Sdn Bhd but also to all the people of Kuching for being part of the trend changes.

“I hope that this iPeople-Qmunity app will continue to be the people’s choice for the years to come to ensure their requests are properly attended and that it could also caution them to look after their safety during this pandemic period,” he said.

Meanwhile, the iPeople app to provide a convenient and seamless channel for reporting, communicating and addressing municipal issues, was launched in 2018. It was later merged with the Qmunity app created to track movement of people for contact tracing during the Covid-19 pandemic.

It was developed to complement the vision of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg to advance utilisation of digital technology in Sarawak.

Wee emphasised that the app was well received by the public with an increase in users since it was first launched.
