KUCHING, Oct 8: Malaysia has reported an increase in suicide rates from 631 cases in 2020 to 1,142 cases in 2021, which is why it is important to look out for each other’s mental well-being.

This was said by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, who quoted Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin while attending the Serian World Mental Health Day 2022 at Serian Community Hall today.

Wee, representing Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian at the event, said there is currently no data collection for mental health studies involving Serian residents.

“However, the community in Serian should be aware of how important it is for everyone to take care of each other’s mental health.

“With this programme, we want to show appreciation to health workers and provide support in strengthening their stress management skills,” he said.

He also added that the programme aims to promote mental health literacy and reduce stigma in local society.

Wee pointed out that various global difficulties, such as pandemics, wars, and natural disasters, have affected people worldwide, including Malaysia.

He said these things affect us not just physically but also mentally and socially, causing an increase in mental health issues.
