KUCHING, March 23: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has not dismissed the idea of renting out electric bikes or bicycles to reduce carbon emissions within its jurisdiction, but its mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said that there is a need for practical implementation.

Wee elaborated that this concept is among several ideas in the council’s pipeline and future planning to foster a cleaner air environment in the city.

“We (the council) welcome everyone’s practical suggestions because this city is our collective responsibility, not solely the council’s,” he said.

While acknowledging the benefits of electric bikes and bicycles, Wee cautioned about ensuring readiness for such facilities, stressing the importance of government support for environmentally friendly transportation initiatives.

“For now, the council’s primary focus should be executing our sustainable development goals for the environment and raising awareness, especially within our jurisdiction,” he asserted.

He reminded, “First, excel in your responsibilities, then we can discuss further.”

“We must prioritise sustainability in our initiatives. Let’s not initiate projects for the sake of it, but rather ensure we can sustain them and their impact on our environment,” he added.

Wee said this during the MBKS Kuching Car Free Day awareness campaign at the Saradise Commercial Centre today.

Continuous efforts, such as Car Free Kuching awareness programmes, aligned with Earth Hour and World Water Day, are vital, he noted.

“We are committed to implementing practical ideas and suggestions that benefit our city’s residents, our home, and our planet,” he affirmed. — DayakDaily
