Man holding gun-like object in viral video at Jln Keretapi jailed, fined

KUCHING, June 23: The 22-year-old man involved in a viral video showing him holding an object resembling a gun was sentenced to three days in jail and fined RM2,500 by the Magistrates’ Court today for possessing an imitation firearm, an incident that gained widespread attention.

Mohammad Afif pleaded guilty to two separate charges read before two different magistrates. One of the charges involved possessing a fake gun in public, an offence under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960.

The offence took place at the Jalan Keretapi junction around 1pm on June 19, where he was seen holding what appeared to be a gun while driving.

Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan sentenced him to three days in jail beginning today.

According to the case facts, a police officer came across a nine-second video posted by a Facebook user under the name ‘Borneo’ at around 4.30pm on the day of the incident.

The clip showed Afif extending his arm out of the driver’s window of a moving Proton Persona, holding what looked like a gun.

Following the report, police arrested Afif at 6.30pm the same day at Taman Sukma, Jalan Sultan Tengah.

Investigations later revealed that Afif had brandished the imitation firearm to intimidate another car that was tailgating him. He admitted to acting out of frustration, claiming the other driver had refused to give way and was driving too closely.

The incident was caught on video by a member of the public.

In a separate case before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali, Afif was also charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for consuming illegal substances—specifically Amphetamine and Methamphetamine.

He was found to have committed the offence during his detention at the Kuching district police headquarters’ narcotics division on May 18, 2021, at around 3.50pm.

For the drug offence, he was fined RM2,500 or three months’ jail in default. Additionally, the court ordered him to undergo two years of police supervision upon completing his sentence or paying the fine.
