Mamma Mia! The Musical to be staged in Kuching for the first time this Tuesday

KUCHING, June 23: Be mesmerised as the Sarawak Arts Council (SAC) together with Sarawak Symphonic Orchestra (SONS) will be performing Mamma Mia! The Musical here.

This would be the second time the musical is staged in the state after a sellout show in Sibu in August last year which attracted a 1,000-strong full house crowd at a leading hotel there.

To be staged at the Kuching Civic Centre this Tuesday (June 25), the show will start at 8pm, with Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Lee Kim Shin expected to grace the show, said SAC chief executive officer Sharkawi Amit during a rehearsal at the venue on Sunday.

“We are expecting to fill up the capacity of this Civic Centre hall of about 800 seated audience. We have given out some 1,200 tickets to the show, which are free,” he said.

Despite free entrance, seating priority would be given to ticket holders, he added.

Performance director Yap Chiew Phin said the group of performers consist of members from SONS and SAC as well as some private learning institutions.

“We have a total of 45 performers, including musicians in the orchestra, dancers and singers,” she said, adding that the show’s duration would be about one hour and 40 minutes.

Mamma Mia The Musical was created by playwright Catherine Johnson, and ‘celebrates life, love and power of women’. The feel-good musical is based on songs of the Swedish group ABBA. It has been viewed by over 60 million fans worldwide.

The play tells the hilarious story of a young woman’s search for her birth father. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they visited 20 years ago.
