KUCHING, Apr 19: Sarawak’s progress under the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) administration should ultimately be judged by the public rather than by its leaders, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg says.
He said the State government’s performance is best assessed through the observations of the people and the recognition Sarawak has received from national leaders, foreign representatives, and investors.
“So far, people have monitored us and they say that in certain areas we are quite advanced,” he told reporters during a press conference after the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Convention 2026 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), today.
According to Abang Johari, the growing attention from foreign diplomats and investors reflects confidence in Sarawak’s development trajectory.
He noted that ambassadors frequently visit the State to explore potential cooperation.
“Almost every week or every month, ambassadors come. Last week I met ambassadors from Bangladesh and Italy,” he said, adding that the Italian delegation had explored the possibility of collaboration in the aerospace sector.
He also pointed to continued investment in Sarawak’s technology and manufacturing sectors as an indicator of confidence in the State’s workforce and economic direction.
He cited the expansion by Western Digital at the Samajaya Free Industrial Zone, which includes a shift in substrate technology from silicon to glass.
“They acknowledged that our students and workers are capable. That is why they are investing about RM2 billion for the expansion in Samajaya,” he said.
The Premier added that Sarawak’s growing engagement with international partners demonstrates that the State’s development efforts are being recognised beyond Malaysia.
“Let people assess us,” he said, reiterating that public perception remains the most meaningful measure of the government’s performance. — DayakDaily
