KUCHING, Oct 18: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will need to take an in-depth look at compliance with electoral regulations and laws to determine whether it can provide assistance to bring Sarawakian youth back to vote in the coming 15th General Election (GE15).

Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, in making this clear, said he noted the requests by Sarawakian students in the peninsula of their intention to return to vote, but the decision will not be an easy one.

“What I said (during a town hall session at Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak 2022 in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 15) was we will consider after discussing with GPS leaders.

“We have to comply with the electoral regulation and law. We have to study the implications. Whether it can be done, we need to look at it (from the perspective of the law) first,” he explained.

Abang Johari highlighted this at a media conference after officiating at the Borneo International Water and Wastewater Exhibition and Conference (BIWWEC) 2022 at Imperial Hotel here today.

Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Julaihi Narawi, Minister of Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Deputy Minister of Utility Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi and Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department director Ir Chang Kuet Shin were among those present.

Meanwhile, the Premier, who is also Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) president, is expected to chair the party’s Supreme Council meeting at PBB headquarters here at 3pm today.

With the Election Commission (EC) set to meet to decide the key dates for GE15 on Oct 20, it is thought PBB’s meeting today could be to finalise the list of its GE15 candidates as well as other necessary preparations in the run up to the election. — DayakDaily
