Kuching with 67 cases overtakes Sibu in highest Covid-19 daily toll

KUCHING, Feb 22: Kuching has overtaken Sibu in recording the highest number of daily Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours.

State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said Kuching recorded a total of 67 new cases and Sibu 63 cases.


The cause of the sudden outbreak was due to the new Emperoh Jambu Cluster which reported 42 cases in Kuching and another seven in the neighboring Samarahan.

Other districts recording new Covid-19 cases are Bintulu (28), Meradong (24), Kapit (15), Samarahan (11), Miri (5), Bau (3), Subis (2), Beluru (1), Betong (1) and Kanowit (1).

Out of the total, 91 were from close contact screenings across seven districts namely in Sibu (43), Bintulu (20), Kuching (10), Meradong (5), Kapit (5), Miri (5) and Bau (3).

Other than that, 26 cases were reported from those who went for swab tests at health centres in Kuching with 12 cases, Sibu (7), Bintulu (3), Samarahan (2), Kapit (1) and Beluru (1).

Seven symptomatic cases were found today in Sibu with three cases, Bintulu (2), Kapit (1) and Betong (1).

Seven health officers were found positive of Coronavirus in Sibu health facilities and another one in Kuching.

Moving on, there were a total of 89 new cases related to active clusters in the state today.

Aside from the Emperoh Jambu Cluster, the Sungai Bakong Cluster recorded 19 cases in Meradong while the Gelong Cluster registered eight new cases in Kapit.

The Pasai Cluster had additional four cases today, with three in Sibu and one in Kanowit while its Tangap Sub-Cluster detected two positive cases in Subis.

Adding on, Kampung Sungai Maong Cluster found two cases in Kuching, Jun Heng Cluster two cases in Bintulu, Kidurong Dua Cluster one in Bintulu and finally the Univista Cluster recorded two cases in Samarahan.

With 221 new Covid-19 cases today, the cumulative number of Covid-19 cases in Sarawak now stands at 8,164.

Uggah, in the Covid-19 press conference today, also reported one fatality case in Sibu involving a 58-year-old Sarawakian male who was found positive on Feb 7.

He said the patient was confirmed to have passed away on Feb 20 and he had a medical history of co-morbid Mixed Connective Tissue Disease (MCTD) with pulmonary involvement.

Meanwhile, he also noted 111 new recoveries who have been discharged from Kapit Hospital (38), Sibu Hospital (36), Miri Hospital (15), Sarawak General Hospital (13), Sarikei Hospital (8) and Limbang Hospital (1). — DayakDaily
