KUCHING, March 12: The municipalities of Kuching, Sibu and Miri will simultaneously turn off their lights for one hour on March 26 at 8.30pm as part of their commitment for the environment and planet during Earth Hour.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will take the lead for this year’s Earth Hour event which will be joined by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and Miri City Council (MCC) from their respective cities.

MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng emphasised that people must take action to conserve and protect the environment and nature in their daily lives and not only for one hour for a better future.

“Earth Hour is a global campaign that aims to raise awareness about combating climate change and the need for everyone to take action to make a change,” he said during his 102nd ShallWeeTalk session today.

SMC chairman Clarence Ting, who also joined the session briefly, explained that the celebration this year will be themed ‘Rethink Plastic’ to urge people in Sarawak to reduce the use of plastic that will only end up in landfills and impact the environment.

“The event will be a simple one to be kicked off with a Facebook live session at 8pm with remarks from municipalities to highlight the significance of Earth Hour.

“Earth Hour is a worldwide programme observed on the last Saturday of March annually in which more than 190 countries are taking part.

“We will then turn off our lights for one hour simultaneously between 8.30pm and 9.30pm to show our support for the planet,” he said.

Ting also called on the public and school students to partake in this activity by switching off power at the same time on March 26, stressing that it is important for people to come together to take collective responsibility in protecting the environment and the planet. — DayakDaily
