KUCHING, Aug 26: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has assured that the affected area at Kuching International Airport (KIA) had been secured, with its teams on site conducting safety inspections and coordinating the necessary response measures following damage caused by heavy rainfall and strong winds yesterday (Aug 25).

The affected section involved part of the external ceiling structure along the inner lane of the airport’s pick-up and drop-off area.

“Our primary concern is the safety and wellbeing of passengers, airport users and staff,” MAHB said in a statement yesterday.

It said airport operations remained ongoing, with efforts focused on ensuring safe access to the terminal and minimising inconvenience to passengers.

A powerful afternoon storm swept across Kuching yesterday afternoon, ripping off ceiling panels at KIA, toppling trees, damaging vehicles and tearing roofing sheets from an apartment block that crashed onto nearby homes in Tabuan Dayak. — Bernama
