KUCHING, June 17: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) leaders cannot champion a “Sarawak First” agenda at home while simultaneously strengthening Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) political machinery elsewhere, as such mixed signals only create uncertainty among voters, said Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap.
Responding to recent reports of Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president Dato Sri Tiong King Sing urging support for PH in the upcoming Johor state election, Yap stressed that political consistency, collective responsibility, and institutional discipline are essential to preserving the unity and credibility of GPS coalition.
“As a representative of SUPP (Sarawak United Peoples’ Party) and a committed team player within GPS, I firmly believe that genuine political leadership requires consistency in both principle and action.
“We cannot champion a ‘Sarawak First’ agenda at home while simultaneously strengthening the political machinery of PH elsewhere. Principles should not shift according to geography or political convenience. Consistency is what earns the trust and confidence of the rakyat,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (June 16).
Yap noted that a similar situation occurred during the Sabah state election, where support was also openly extended to PH, warning that such actions risk confusing grassroots supporters and voters.
With the Sarawak Election drawing closer, he said GPS leaders must remain focused on delivering a clear, united and coherent message to the people.
“The grassroots expect clarity and conviction from their leaders. It is difficult to reconcile calls to support PH in Johor or Sabah when the same coalition’s component parties continue to challenge GPS and SUPP in Sarawak. Such mixed signals can only create uncertainty among voters,” he said.
Yap added that GPS has built its success on consensus-based leadership, mutual respect among component parties, and a shared commitment to defending Sarawak’s interests.
“Political maturity requires us to respect collective decisions and maintain solidarity within the coalition. GPS has succeeded because we put Sarawak’s interests above individual political considerations. That unity must remain our greatest strength,” he said.
Reaffirming his support for GPS under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Yap said SUPP would continue focusing on delivering development, improving public services, and safeguarding Sarawak’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
“Our mission remains clear. SUPP Kota Sentosa is fully mobilised, stable, and firmly rooted in the community. We respect the collective spirit and institutional boundaries of our GPS partners, and our focus remains on serving the rakyat, advancing development, and securing a strong and united mandate for GPS in the coming Sarawak Election.
“Ultimately, consistency builds credibility, consensus strengthens unity, and unity is the foundation of GPS’s continued success. The people of Sarawak deserve nothing less,” he added. — DayakDaily
