KUCHING, March 22: Bintulu will become a hydrogen gas production hub following investments by South Korean conglomerate Samsung and Japanese corporation Sumitomo respectively, says Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“The investors will buy back the hydrogen, which is estimated to be produced up to 100,000 tonnes.

“With this follows the increase in activities in Tanjung Kidurong. Therefore, the public transport system between Bintulu town and Tanjung Kidurong should be modernised with the construction of Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system routes to facilitate movement between Bintulu and the industrial centre in Tanjung Kidurong,” he said, adding that Bintulu will be the second location in the State to have the ART system in place after Kuching.

He said this during his speech at the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) appreciation dinner in Bintulu tonight.

“It is already clear that Tanjung Kidurong will be a hub to produce petrochemicals from natural gas sources off the coast. This morning I reviewed the progress of the construction of the methanol plant in Tanjung Kidurong, which is wholly owned by Sarawak.

“We are going towards a green economy, and we are one of the few places in the world which are going to transform our economy towards a green economy,” he said.

He explained that this comes as part of the State’s efforts to move forward as today’s world places emphasis on the green economy and environmentally-friendly practices. — DayakDaily
