Kapit boat tragedy: 3 bodies found; 2 identified as cop, operator

SIBU, March 10: Two of the three bodies found yesterday were among the four persons feared to have drowned when their boat capsized in Kapit.

Kapit district police chief DSP Rohana Nanu said the first body was found by members of the public in Batang Rajang near Lanang Bridge around noon, while the second body was found floating in front of the Kapit express boat terminal at around 4.15pm.


“The first body was found by a man who was fishing under the Lanang Bridge and taken to Sibu Hospital, and the victim was identified as the boat’s operator, Jack Balan, 45,” she said today, adding that the deceased’s wife also confirmed the identity.

The second body, she said, was also found washed up in front of the Belaga jetty at 4.04pm.

“The second body had been identified as Sergeant Jonathan Lambert, 51, who was dressed in police uniform and was taken to the jetty at Jalan Bleteh before being handed over to the police to be taken to Kapit Hospital.

“At about 6.10pm yesterday, we were informed about the discovery of a third body in Tanjung Singat,” she added.

According to Rohana, the identity of the third body has yet to be confirmed.

The search operation was resumed today.

In an incident around 5pm on March 7, two policemen and two other passengers were reported missing and feared drowned when a fibre boat carrying five people sank in Batang Baleh near SK Lepong Baleh in Kapit.

Only one man, identified as Moses Ngui, 47, was rescued by the public at that time.

Yet to be found or confirmed are Constable Iskandar Zulkarnain Ibrahim, 28, and Emerson John James Naim, 47. — DayakDaily
