KUCHING, Aug 17: A 67-year-old man was fined RM6,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here today for threatening to shoot a businesswoman during an argument over fireworks.
Saidi Abang Samsudin pleaded guilty to criminal intimidation under Section 506 of the Penal Code before Magistrate Nur Syaheeqa Nazwa Radzali.
He was ordered to pay the fine or face 12 months in jail if he failed to settle the amount.
The court heard that the incident occurred at about 11.02am on Dec 22, 2023, at an eatery at Jalan Wan Alwi.
The woman, 38, had been at her newly opened business next to the eatery for its opening ceremony when Saidi called her to a table at the restaurant.
He then allegedly displayed a firearm and told her, “I feel like shooting you.”
Frightened by the threat, the woman reported the matter to police.
Saidi was arrested at about 11.30pm on the same day, with police recovering a Springfield XDS 9mm pistol, a magazine, five rounds of 9mm ammunition, and a firearm licence book.
Investigations later confirmed that the confrontation, including Saidi showing the firearm to the woman, had been captured on CCTV.
The incident was believed to have been triggered by Saidi’s frustration over fireworks being set off during the opening of the neighbouring business.
The loud blasts and ash from the fireworks had allegedly entered the eatery, where Saidi was having his meal, prompting him to confront the business owner.
Section 506 of the Penal Code provides for up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Aidil Akmal Sharidan appeared for the prosecution. — DayakDaily
