SIBU, March 13: A homeless family of four who lived in the forest for almost a year was successfully rescued and placed in the Sibu temporary transit centre for the homeless (TTG).

According to a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Sarawak Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said the mother, identified as Rose Akam, 53, with her three children aged 23, 21, and 12, were left homeless after their house in Sibu Jaya was sold by their father.

“The youngest sibling never attended school while the first two siblings have stopped going to school since Primary 6 and are now working,” she said when officiating at the closing ceremony of ‘Train the Trainer: Adult Literacy’ programme and the launching of Adult Literacy Activity Book and Hurufku Sayang Block in Sibu yesterday.

Fatimah said she had requested Sibu TTG to deal with ‘Destiny for Children’ for the youngest child to learn there before moving to mainstream education.

Meanwhile, the first two brothers can continue to work and learn to read simultaneously.

“We also found out that the family has birth certificates, but they do not have identification cards (IC).

“We will also ask TTG to manage this matter with National Registration Department (NRD),” she added. — DayakDaily
