Night market to go on despite fire incident at Butterfly Garden in Sibu

SIBU, March 13: The fire which destroyed six shoplots at Butterfly Garden yesterday morning (March 12) will not affect the operations of the night market located within the compound.

The matter was confirmed by the chairman of the Standing Committee of the Market and Petty Traders Committee of the Sibu Municipal Council (MPS), Councillor Albert Tiang Ming Ing, when contacted today.


“Our night market will still be operating as usual and is not affected by the incident (fire),” he added.

Tiang said the night market has about 164 stalls at the moment.

It was reported that six shop lots housed 17 shops — 16 were destroyed, while one was partially destroyed in the early morning fire.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sibu chief Andy Alie said his station received an emergency call at 2.25am and despatched 29 firefighters from the Central, Sungai Merah, and Sibu Jaya fire stations to the scene, where they managed to contain the fire at 5am.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. — DayakDaily
