KUCHING, April 10: Sarawak’s free tertiary education is a forward-thinking initiative which will bring long-term economic returns to the State and its people, Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Stakan chairman Dato Sim Kiang Chiok says.

In a statement today, he praised this initiative, which will take place starting in 2026, and highlighted its potential to shape a more prosperous and sustainable future for Sarawak.

“The long-term economic returns of this initiative are substantial. By providing access to quality education, Sarawak is not only equipping its younger generation with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in an increasingly competitive global market, but it is also investing in the future leaders and innovators of our state,” he said.

Sim emphasised that a well-educated workforce will drive our industries, increase productivity, and ultimately contribute to the prosperity and sustainable growth of Sarawak.

“This is a reinvestment of our wealth in the most valuable asset we have – our people,” he said

He further pointed out that this policy is a clear reflection of Sarawak’s long-term vision for development, with strong emphasis on investing in our youth.

“With the world rapidly advancing in terms of technology, industry, and knowledge, Sarawak’s decision to prioritise education will undoubtedly reap long-term benefits.

“By offering free tertiary education, the State is ensuring that every Sarawakian has an equal opportunity to obtain higher education, empowering them to become part of a skilled and capable workforce,” he added.

Sim also said that this initiative aligns with objectives under the Sarawak’s Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

“By 2030, we envision a Sarawak where a steady stream of highly educated and skilled workforce driving our state to new heights. With this policy, we are not only retaining talent within Sarawak but also fostering a culture of lifelong learning that will sustain the development of our state and take it to greater achievements.

“This landmark policy will serve as a catalyst for change and development, and we look forward to witnessing the positive impact it will have on Sarawak’s future,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sim contrasted Sarawak’s government’s proactive approach with the unfulfilled promises of opposition parties.

He pointed out that with this initiative, Sarawak’s government has pushed the State forward, standing firm on its commitment to fulfilling its promises and placing the well-being of Sarawakians at the heart of its policies, as compared with opposition parties such as DAP and PKR.

“For years, opposition leaders have failed to deliver on promises such as the recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) and the cancellation of PTPTN loans. These unfulfilled promises have left many young Sarawakians disillusioned.

“On the other hand, the GPS-led state government has consistently shown its dedication to the welfare of its people, ensuring tangible outcomes like this free tertiary education policy,” he opined.

“We stand to gain more by backing GPS, which has demonstrated a commitment to fulfilling its promises and placing the well-being of Sarawakians at the heart of its policies,” he added.

Sim expressed his gratitude to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for moving forward this significant and progressive policy.

“His leadership and vision in prioritising education for all Sarawakians are commendable. This policy will positively impact generations to come, fostering a sense of equality, opportunity, and empowerment.” – DayakDaily
