KUCHING, June 25: Effective July 1, all forestry projects in Sarawak are required to conduct one internal and one external Environmental Compliance Audit (ECA) annually.
Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Sarawak Controller of Environmental Quality Jack Liam said the forestry sector will transition from the existing practice of Environmental Monitoring Report (EMR) submission to the self-regulating ECA.
“This dual-audit system is designed to ensure compliance with environmental standards and to promote sustainable forestry practices,” he said in a statement on Monday (June 24).
He also said the introduction of ECA underscores Sarawak’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development within its forestry sector.
By implementing these audits, he added, NREB aims to ensure that forestry operations are conducted in an environmentally responsible manner and safeguard the natural resources for future generations.
“NREB Sarawak remains dedicated to supporting the forestry sector through its transition and will provide guidance and resources to facilitate compliance with the new audit requirements.
“We look forward to the continued collaboration with industry stakeholders to achieve our shared environmental goals and to promote self-regulation among all industry players,” said Jack. — DayakDaily
