KUCHING, July 4: The Federal government, through the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), has approved RM9.46 million under the First Rolling Plan (RP1) of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to execute 52 ‘Cakna MADANI’ flood mitigation projects across Sarawak.

According to a PETRA press statement today, these ‘low-hanging fruit’ initiatives are progressing steadily to provide immediate relief to local communities.

The ministry revealed that out of the 52 approved works, 12 are completed, 13 are currently underway and 27 remain in the pre-implementation phase

Highlighting the progress on the ground, Deputy Prime Minister and PETRA Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof today visited one of the active sites involving riverbank stabilization works at the Tab Cinaq Cemetery in Miri.

The RM134,682 site which commenced in May 2026 and is slated for completion in November 2026, involves constructing a 50-meter gabion wall to curb erosion and prevent the cemetery infrastructure from collapsing.

While reviewing the cemetery works, Fadillah was also briefed on the broader, RM31 million Sungai Miri Flood Mitigation Project (RTB).

Physical works for the RTB project, which took off in October 2023, have now reached 58.11 per cent completion and are on track to wrap up by November 2026. Once completed, the comprehensive infrastructure will feature a tide wall, retention ponds, upgraded drainage systems, a pump house, flood control gates and trash traps.

These localised efforts form part of a much larger federal commitment with the ministry noting that the Federal government has allocated a total of RM3.834 billion to execute 29 major flood mitigation projects across Sarawak, significantly strengthening the state’s climate resilience while protecting lives and property. — DayakDaily
