KUCHING, July 4: Completed in just six months, Miri’s new convention centre is set to strengthen the city’s position as a leading tourism destination and major events hub in Sarawak.
According to Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, the rapid development reflects the State’s continued commitment to strengthening tourism infrastructure and the creative industry in the city.
“I am truly inspired by this development. In just six months, everything has been completed, and the facility is ready to be used at any time,” he said after inspecting the facility at the Kenyalang Smart City in Miri today, as reported by TVS.
He noted that the convention centre will not only serve as a venue for conferences and business events but also has significant potential to support the growth of the local arts, culture, and creative industries.
At the same time, he said that the facility could serve as an alternative to Kuching, which has long been the primary venue for hosting large-scale events in Sarawak.
“For many years, most conferences have been held in Kuching, but now Miri has its own option. This will ease the burden on Kuching while at the same time stimulating Miri’s economy,” he said.
He also highlighted that several events have already been scheduled through the end of this year, including an international golf tournament, demonstrating Miri’s strong potential as a global events destination.
At the same time, the rapid development is expected to generate spillover benefits for various sectors, particularly the hospitality industry, including hotels, restaurants, and local businesses.
“When more conferences and events are held, they will automatically stimulate other industries, including food, hospitality and services. This will create more employment opportunities for the people,” he explained. — DayakDaily
