KUCHING, Sept 3: A Malaysian Army personnel member saved the life of a drowning victim after performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for nearly 15 minutes at Sungai Nanga Mujau, Spak in Betong today.
Corporal Mohammad Badrulamin Mohd Rosdi of B Company, 13th Battalion, Royal Malay Regiment (13 RAMD), sprang into action after army personnel heard cries for help from members of the public while carrying out a humanitarian water distribution operation at Rumah Mujau longhouse at about 11am.
The victim had been pulled to the riverbank by family members and was reportedly unconscious when Mohammad Badrulamin arrived at the scene.
Recognising the critical situation, he immediately began administering CPR to the victim.
His sustained efforts for almost 15 minutes eventually helped the victim regain partial consciousness, allowing him to be safely moved away from the riverbank.
The victim was then evacuated to the Layar Spak Health Clinic in Betong at about 11.15am using a military pickup truck for further medical treatment.
He was subsequently placed in the Emergency Zone ward at noon for monitoring by medical officers.
According to an official statement issued by the Malaysian Army’s 1st Infantry Division (1 Div) today, the incident occurred while personnel from B Company, 13 RAMD were distributing bottled drinking water to residents of Rumah Mujau in a humanitarian operation conducted alongside the Betong Civil Defence Force (APM) and Social Welfare Department (JKM).
The army commended Mohammad Badrulamin and the other personnel involved for their swift response, courage and professionalism in handling the emergency.
The incident, it said, demonstrated the army’s commitment not only to providing logistical assistance during disaster relief operations, but also to safeguarding the safety and lives of local communities.
