KUCHING, Sept 3: Engineers of the future will have to develop technologies capable of detecting AI-generated answers in examinations as artificial intelligence (AI) creates new ways for students to cheat, says Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said he had read about AI-enabled glasses that could potentially provide users with answers, raising questions over how such technology could be detected and prevented from being misused during examinations.
“Now I saw one, I read one story about, you know, you can use the glass just like AI. You have all the answers there, then you just write in your examination paper.
“That will be a situation where, like you, Professor, has to examine whether it is real or artificial,” he said when speaking during a fireside chat session moderated by Academician Emeritus Prof Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Chuah Hean Teik at the Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and the Pacific (FEIAP) General Assembly held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today.
According to Abang Johari, engineers would need to respond to such technological threats by developing counter-technologies.
“The solution, perhaps, you know, if you have that situation, there must be another device that can detect, detection device.
“Just like hacking, you must have a device to stop hacking. And these are something new in engineering facility,” he explained.
Abang Johari also pointed to developments in artificial hearts, saying advances in the field could eventually allow people to live longer.
He said such medical breakthroughs would bring another challenge for engineers as longer life expectancy would contribute to an ageing population and require changes to social systems.
“So, longer means ageing population, so the whole social system will also change. Engineers have to find the supporting changes to support ageing population,” he said. — DayakDaily
