SIBU, March 16: It was a sombre atmosphere as family and friends bid farewell to one of the Kapit boat tragedy victims, Constable Iskandar Ibrahim, today.

The remains of Iskandar were buried at the Kemuyang Muslim Cemetery here, witnessed by his wife, Anis Nur Ezzati, along with his parents and 12 siblings.

His remains were taken to the cemetery after the funeral prayers at the Jabal An-Nur Bleteh Mosque in Kapit, approximately three hours away.

Iskandar, who was from Kelantan, has served in the Kapit police for two years and four months.

Also present to pay their last respects were Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata and his wife, Datin Jennita William.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili, Kapit police chief Rohana Nanu, and Song district police chief DSP Rowney Michael Jalak were also present.

The tragic incident happened on March 7 at around 5pm when five passengers, including Iskandar, boarded a boat carrying 35kg of explosives and detonators from Kuching to Nanga Tulie.

According to Rohana, the boat veered slightly upstream and encountered a whirlpool, causing it to capsize.

Only one passenger, 47-year-old Moses Ngui, was managed to be rescued by members of the public, while the remaining four went missing.

The other three who went missing were 51-year-old Sgt Jonathan Lambet and civilians 44-year-old Jack Balan and 47-year-old Amerson John Nain; their remains were also recovered. — DayakDaily
