KUCHING, Jan 15: The number of Omicron cases in Sarawak will most likely reach its peak in February, says Deputy Chief Minister Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

With the Chinese New Year celebration just around the corner, he was concerned the situation could get worse when Covid-19 cases involving the latest variant is showing signs of increasing.

He thus urged the public not to be complacent despite the festive month, to prevent any local transmissions.

“Unfortunately, Omicron probably will peak in Sarawak in February. Though we all treasure our tradition and culture, you and I must treasure our lives much more.

“Stay alive so we have many more years to go,” he said in a social media post dated Jan 13.

Earlier, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s (Unimas) Institute of Health and Community Medicine (IHCM) director Prof Dr David Perera said there were an additional 36 Omicron cases reported in Kuching, Samarahan, Sibu and Kapit divisions this month.

Noting that the majority of the Omicron cases in the State involve community transmission, he also urged the general public to avoid any community gatherings to curb the spread of Omicron. — Dayakdaily
