KUCHING, Sept 4: Proposed amendments to Sarawak’s housing laws are still with the State Attorney-General (SAG), with no clear timeline yet for their tabling in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS).
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the proposed amendments to the Housing Development (Control and Licensing) Ordinance 2013 and Housing Development (Control and Licensing) Regulations 2014 were currently undergoing the State’s legal process.
“About the HDO 2013, HDR 2014, it’s with SAG.
“And at the end of the day, sometimes it’s the SAG, they refine it, they want to table it, and so on,” he said when speaking at the opening of the SHEDA Property Expo 2026 at voco Kuching by IHG here today.
Dr Sim, who is the Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, was responding to Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers’ Association (SHEDA) president Dato Augustine CH Wong’s call for an assurance that the proposed amendments would be tabled before the current DUS is dissolved.
However, Dr Sim did not give a firm commitment on when the amendments would be tabled.
He said the legal process could take time, citing the Sarawak Building Ordinance as an example.
“You know, just like our Sarawak Building Ordinance, we wait for two years,” he said.
Earlier, Wong had directly appealed to Dr Sim for reassurance that the proposed amendments would be brought before the DUS within the remaining legislative timeframe.
Wong said SHEDA was seeking greater certainty over the regulatory framework governing the housing industry and wanted the amendments tabled before the State Assembly was dissolved.
Dr Sim said he remained open to discussions with the housing industry on the proposed amendments.
“I’m more than happy,” he said, adding that SHEDA and industry representatives could continue to engage with him on the matter. — DayakDaily
