KUCHING, June 29: Concerns have been raised over the alleged last-minute cancellation or disruption of a Class B2 Motorcycle Licence Assistance Programme in Mas Gading, which was intended to assist youths and B40 participants in obtaining their motorcycle licences.
Malaysian Action for Justice and Unity (MAJU) co-founder Peter John Jaban said the programme was a community initiative aimed at delivering direct benefits to the people and should not be affected by political considerations.
He claimed the alleged withdrawal of the venue at a late stage was disappointing, especially as preparations had already been made and relevant parties, including the Road Transport Department (JPJ), had reportedly been engaged for the programme.
“We must not allow political differences to become a reason for the rakyat (people) to lose out on opportunities that can improve their lives,” he said in a statement recently.
He stressed that such initiatives should be allowed to proceed regardless of the organiser’s political affiliation, noting that elected representatives serve all constituents.
Mas Gading MP Mordi Bimol, he added, is an elected representative serving people from all walks of life, and programmes benefiting the community should not be influenced by political alignment.
He also warned that repeated disruptions to community-based initiatives could lead to public frustration, particularly among those who view such programmes as opportunities for assistance rather than political tools.
Instead, he said all parties should uphold fairness, transparency and professionalism in managing public programmes to ensure that the interests of the people remain the priority.
“The rakyat expects fairness, transparency and professionalism from all parties,” he added.
On June 26, Mordi issued a statement announcing the postponement of the B2 Motorcycle Licence Assistance Programme involving 750 participants, originally scheduled to be held on June 27, 2026.
He said the decision was made after the organisers reportedly did not receive confirmation from the Bau District Office regarding the use of the REDEEMS Centre in Kampung Apar Singai, Bau, which had been identified as the venue for the programme’s closing and certificate handover ceremony.
He explained that the programme, involving youths, students, B40 groups and local residents, was part of a series of initiatives under the Federal Government through the Ministry of Transport and the Road Transport Department (JPJ), and that preparations had been made with relevant agencies, including JPJ Sarawak and driving institute partners. — DayakDaily
