Deputy Premier urges flood victims to move to temporary evacuation centres as safety measure

KUCHING, Mar 1: Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas is urging those affected by the floods to move to temporary evacuation centres (PPS) immediately for their safety, as it is unknown how high the floodwaters will rise in a particular area.

Uggah told reporters this after visiting the PPS at Surau Nur Hidayah Kampung Batu Kitang Jaya and SJK(C) Chung Hua Batu Kawa last night here.

“I strongly urge them to evacuate, as we do not know how high floodwaters can rise in a given area and thus must move to save lives.


“Therefore, if there is a directive to move to a PPS, we urge everyone to do so for the sake of safety.

“In addition, I implore the village chiefs and other community leaders to cooperate in order to ensure that lives and property, especially lives, are saved,” he said.

He continued by saying that all relevant government departments and agencies have been put on high alert to assist flood victims and place them in the PPS.

There are currently 6 PPS’ open in Kuching, Bau, Serian, and Siburan to house a total of 282 flood victims from 67 families.

The PPS’ are located at Surau Nur Hidayah Kampung Batu Kitang Jaya, which houses 124 flood victims from 26 families; SJK(C) Chung Hua Batu Kawa, which houses 80 flood victims from 19 families; Dewan Serbaguna Batu Kitang Jaya, which houses 22 flood victims from 5 families; Dewan Dato Sri Ts Mohammad Hamdan Balai Bomba Bau, which houses 20 flood victims from 8 families; Balai Raya Kampung Opar, which houses 9 flood victims from 2 families; and Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Mundai, which houses 27 flood victims from 7 families. — DayakDaily
