SPAOH, April 16: Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas has advised Sarawakians to take the necessary steps to avoid Covid-19 infection as Peninsular Malaysia and some countries recorded an increase in number of cases.

He described Sarawak’s Covid-19 situation as “so far so good” but reminded that this should not lull the people into complacency.

Thus, he has called on Sarawakians to take the necessary steps like masking, practising social distancing in big gatherings, and consulting a doctor immediately when developing a fever.

Uggah who is also the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman further said the region has been experiencing hot and dry weather since last week.

Following that, he informed that SDMC would meet soon to discuss and prevent localised haze occurrences as well as alert all divisional disaster management committees (DDMCs) to keep a close watch on all hotspots and potential ones in their respective divisions.

“They must always be on their toes and make the necessary preparations like in dealing with fire outbreaks and other related problems,” he said after attending a breaking of fast function at Masjid Darul Syifa here last night (April 15).

Additionally, he hoped that the people and those working in the plantation industry would not do any open burnings.

“Always extinguish any fire you have started in your garden or farm before leaving. The longer the dry season, the more the wood and vegetation debris in all these places will be highly combustible.

“Thus, a small fire can become big, especially in peat soil areas,” he added.
