KUCHING, June 13: The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government will continue fighting for Sarawak’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) regardless of who forms the federal government, says Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.

She stressed that the pursuit of Sarawak’s rights is an ongoing struggle that will not be affected by political developments in Peninsular Malaysia, including the possibility of an early general election.

“The MA63 negotiations will continue no matter who forms the federal government. This is a struggle to restore our rights,” she told reporters after officiating the Samariang Festival at Surau Nurul Muslimin compound in Kampung Sungai Bedil here today.

Sharifah Hasidah, who is also Samariang assemblywoman, further reiterated that GPS will continue championing Sarawak’s rights regardless of whether elections are held, and acknowledged that implementing and resolving matters related to MA63 is not a simple process and will require time.

“This is the work we have always been doing. The struggle is not over, and we will continue with it.

“We will continue to ensure that what we are demanding is returned to us. It will take time, but as long as the GPS government remains, we will continue to champion (for our rights under) MA63,” she added.

This followed talks of an early general election, as Johor and Negeri Sembilan are set to carry out their state elections on July 11 and August 1, respectively, as well as amid growing political tensions.

The next general election is not due until February 2028, but Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim can seek the consent of the country’s king to dissolve Parliament earlier. — DayakDaily
