KUCHING, July 4: The Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Kuching branch has been urged to lodge a police report regarding the alleged misuse of data collected from senior citizens through their mobile service initiatives to apply for and distribute counterfeit or non-compliant Kenyalang Gold Cards (KGCs).
In a statement, Sarawak Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (DAPSY) Kuching chief George Lam added that the act of forging or faking the KGC must be treated as a serious criminal offence.
“Section 466 of the Penal Code clearly states that forging official documents is punishable by up to seven years in prison and a fine. If the allegations are true, SUPP Kuching should not hide behind a media clarification—it should immediately lodge a police report and cooperate fully with the authorities,” he said.
Furthermore, he also called on the Sarawak Welfare Department to initiate a thorough internal investigation, not only into the forgery itself but also to determine whether any civil servants are involved, particularly those who may have leaked the original design of the KGC, thereby enabling such counterfeits to be produced so easily.
At the same time, he stated that the department should reevaluate whether SUPP should continue to serve as an official welfare proxy. Currently, SUPP is allowed to represent individuals in applying for the KGC and to distribute these cards through their party branches or mobile units.
“Since this incident originated from SUPP Kuching, I urge all affected elderly individuals to visit the welfare department to verify the authenticity of the cards they received.
“We at DAP stand ready to assist anyone impacted by this scandal. I welcome all affected residents to come to any DAP service centre—we will do everything we can to help them seek justice and ensure that those who deceive the people are held fully accountable.”
In a public statement on July 2, SUPP Kuching clarified that it shall not be held responsible or liable for any actions by some party members allegedly engaging in improper practices in the application and issuance of the KGC.
It further urged affected individuals to contact the branch at 082-244633 for clarification and assistance. — DayakDaily
