MIRI, 8 Feb: It is pivotal to continue empowering Tuai Rumah, Ketua Kaum and Village Development and Security Committees (JKKKs) with knowledge to spur further development in rural areas, as they are the driving force and an essential part of the local community, says Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development II (Port Development) Dato Majang Renggi.

“They are an important grassroots institution in the community and I believed with their commitment, clear vision and mission, they will be able to change the lives of the rural people,” he opined.

Majang added, the capability and effectiveness of a JKKK, Tuai Rumah or Ketua Kaum of a longhouse or kampung is measured by their ability in securing development projects for their respective villages.

Majang said this when speaking at the closing of a two-day JKKK effective management skills programme in Niah and Suai today.

A total of 226 Tuai Rumah from the two zones took part in the programme held at Sepupok Community Hall, which is about 82km from Miri City.

“Thus, it is crucial for JKKK, Tuai Rumah and Ketua Kaum to always enhance their administrative and management skills to help the State government develop the rural areas,” Majang pointed out.

To further strengthen the role of JKKKs, Ketua Kaum and Tuai Rumah, Majang said, they need to establish bureaus in their respective village or longhouse.

“These bureaus are aimed at helping JKKKs to collect village or longhouse profile data….this kind of information is important and needed from time-to-time by government agencies to ensure that information can be easily obtained if required,” he explained.

Majang said that the State government under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has been always committed to empowering JKKKs, Tuai Rumah and Ketua Kaum with administrative and management skills to further develop rural areas.
