Covid-19: Sarawak ranks second nationwide, Sibu tops number of new cases

KUCHING, March 8: Sarawak registered the second highest number of daily coronavirus cases among all the states nationwide.

According to information from the Ministry of Health, Sarawak reported 252 new cases of Covid-19 today.


The state ranked second behind Selangor which reported 726 cases and ahead of Johor which registered 120 cases.

Other states such as Negri Sembilan registered 89 new cases, followed by Penang (76), Sabah (71), Kuala Lumpur (71), Perak (49), Kelantan (28), Perlis (17), Terengganu (13), Kedah (9), Melaka (4), Pahang (3) and Putrajaya (1).

In Sarawak, the Sibu district topped the number of new cases for Covid-19.

The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in a press statement said there were 149 cases reported in Sibu, followed by Bintulu with 23 cases, Miri (17) Subis (13), Kuching (7), Mukah (7), Betong (6), Sarikei (6), Sebauh (6), Kanowit (5), Kapit (5), Julau (2), Meradong (2), Belaga (1), Beluru (1), Samarahan (1) and Tatau (1).

For the cases in Sibu, 133 out of the 149 cases identified were asymptomatic.

There were also 14 cases identified from screening of symptomatic individuals and two cases which involved healthcare workers in Sibu.

On another note, there was one case of fatality due to Covid-19 reported in Sarawak.

It involved a 66-year-old man from Kapit who was tested positive for Covid-19 on March 1 and was suffering from anemia aplastic.

With the additional death, the death toll due to Covid-19 in Sarawak has increased to 88 persons.

There were 182 Covid-19 patients who recovered and were allowed to be discharged from hospitals and low risk quarantine centres.

In spite of that, a total of 2,446 Covid-19 patients were still being treated at nine health facilities and low risk quarantine centres statewide.
