Covid-19: First two Omicron cases in Sarawak from UK, USA

KUCHING, Dec 18: The first two Covid-19 Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant cases that have been detected in Sarawak as of Dec 17 are imported cases, with one patient originating from the United Kingdom and another from the United States of America (USA).

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the USA returnee has been classified as being a Category 1 patient with no symptoms while the other was diagnosed as a Category 2 patient with mild symptoms.

The two Malaysians were among 11 of the new Omicron cases in Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur accounted for six of them, with two in Selangor and one in Perlis.


All 11 of the import cases reached Malaysian lands between Dec 10 and 12. Further investigations on all cases are ongoing to identify the sources of infection and their close contacts.

Dr Noor Hisham, in a statement today, said this brings the cumulative number of confirmed Omicron cases among imported cases to 13.

On Dec 3, Malaysia recorded its first Omicron case involving a 19-year-old foreign student from South Africa who arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) entry point through Singapore on Nov 19.

The second case happened just two days ago on Dec 16 involving an eight-year-old Malaysian girl who has been residing in Lagos, Nigeria with her family. — DayakDaily
