KUCHING, Nov 10: Gas leaks related to piped gas and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders, as well as improper use or storage of the fuel resource is a safety hazard, and may cause fires or explosions that can cause property damage and serious injuries that may also result in death.

Petroleum Sarawak Gas Sdn Bhd (Petros Gas business) and PETROSNiaga Sdn Bhd (PNiaga LPG business), subsidiaries of Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros), would like to share the recommended good practices when using gas appliances in homes and businesses.

Conduct regular safety checks on your gas related appliances including cylinders, piping/hoses, regulators, or meters by ensuring:

  • There are no signs of corrosion, cracks or damage;
  • There is always sufficient ventilation to prevent build-up of explosive mixture, in case of any leaks;
  • LPG cylinders are secured and located away from ignition or heat sources and combustible materials; and
  • Regular leak check of the gas system is carried out.

The public should also carry out a simple leak check on their gas system using the following steps:

  1. In a spray bottle, dilute some detergent with water.
  2. With the gas system turned on, lightly spray the solution onto the:
      • connection pipes or regulator hose, the gas regulator; and
      • any other connection point(s) to the gas device(s).
  3. Bubbles will appear when there is a leak – if this happens, mark the point of the leak and immediately switch off the gas supply.
  4. Ventilate the room to disperse any gas and remove any ignition or heat sources.
  5. Do not use the gas system until the leak has been fixed.
  6. Once the check is completed, carefully wipe off any moisture. — DayakDaily
