Villages in Baram weather heavy rain, floods as monsoon season intensifies

MIRI, Nov 10: Heavy rains since Tuesday have caused two villages in Baram areas to become inundated with floodwaters, effecting nearly 1,000 residents.

According to Acting Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 6 chief Ahmad Nizam Sapaiee, the two effected areas are Kampung Long Bemang (530 residents) and Long Loyang in Tinjar (405 residents).


The floodwater level at both villages as of today have rose up to 1.5 feet high.

However, he said that Bomba will continue to monitor the flood situation in these areas.

At the moment, no evacuation has been made as the situation is still under control.

“Floods in Kampung Long Bemang has started since Nov 8, while in Long Loyang, the floodwaters has begun to increase drastically early this morning (Thursday, Nov 10) around 4am,” he said.

Kampung Long Bemang is a Kayan Longhouse located in the interior area of Tutoh Apoh Baram and is prone to flooding. — DayakDaily
